Due to the wide daily temperature range and abundant sunlight, Yeoju has the perfect climate for cultivating pears. The deep and rich sandy soil has allowed the farmers to produce high-quality pears. Thanks to the drastic temperature difference between night and day during the fall, Yeoju pears have a distinct flavor and color.

The pears of Yeoju are getting more and more popular as the new regional specialty. Pear trees bloom white flowers around mid-to-late April and make pea-sized fruits. Then, farmers remove all fruits except for the biggest and thickest one for each bunch. Middle to late-ripening fruits are covered with plastic bags to prevent damage from insects and germs; harvest continues until mid-September to mid-October. This “One Branch, One Fruit” method allows the farmers to pick out the flowers, leading to pears that are rounder and thicker than those from other regions.
