Yeoju Porcelain

Yeoju porcelain carries the thousand-year-old legacy and traditions of celadons, white porcelains, and buncheong ceramics produced in the region.

Just across the river heading northwest from Yeoju is the Yeoju Ceramics Village with around 400 porcelain factories and 300 personal exhibition halls. The areas of Ogeum-dong, Hyeonam-dong, Ohak-dong, Cheonsong-dong, and Jinae-ri are exuberated with rich culture of traditional ceramics.

Records say that ceramics began being crafted in the early years of Goreyo and the ceramics industry started its development in the early Joseon dynasty. That was because the best materials for porcelain, including clay, white clay, and kaolin were produced around Ssarisan Mountain, which was the border between Dasin-myeon and Yeoju-eup.

The Porcelain Test Report by the Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1932 shows that the productivity of the area had the current value of KRW 1.5 billion per year, forming the country’s largest pottery village. The fervent sponsorship, support for the ceramics industry, and in-depth research helped the village to succeed the styles of masters and develop new products. Various types of porcelains, including celadons, white porcelains, buncheong, and watae, and the mass production of daily-life necessities, such as ancestral rite utensils, vases, dishes, teacups, and plates are both possible. Yeoju ceramics allow you to appreciate spectacular pieces of art as well as select the porcelain that matches your taste at affordable prices.

The village hosts the Yeoju Ceramic Festival with all porcelain businesses participating in the event under the slogan of “The Tradition of the Porcelain of a Millennium Lies in Yeoju” along with the commemoration event for King Sejong, inviting a large number of tourists into the area. The ceramics village has around 60 personal exhibition halls as well as the integrated exhibition center. You can enjoy the production of porcelains from any company in the village.
