Godalsa Temple Site

Introduction

It is said that Godalsa Temple was built in 764, the 23rd year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign during the Silla dynasty. Also called Godalwon, it once enjoyed royal protection as the temple used to have a considerable size and was managed by the nation during the Goryeo dynasty, being one of the three major “Won,” including Dobongwon, Huiyangwon, and Godalwon. Currently, the Stupa at Godalsa Temple Site, National Treasure No. 4, and Treasures No. 6, 7, and 8 are located inside the temple site; these stone relics are still filled with the magnificent and solemn atmosphere while letting out the spirit of might and vigor.

The temple is speculated to have had an enormous size at the time of its initial foundation, as the entire region of Sanggyo-ri is estimated to have been within the temple’s boundaries. It would have been likely that there was a village near the temple. The area may still be vast, but only the relics remain. Yearly excavations have been conducted since 1990 with the outskirt maintenance project; currently, a comprehensive renovation is planned to be implemented.
