Sweet potatoes of Yeoju, known for its chestnut-like texture and sweetness when boiled, is a perfect snack for the winter.

Sweet potatoes were imported to Korea after Jo Eom visited Japan on a mission and went back with seed sweet potatoes in 1763, the 39th year of King Yeongjo. Yeoju’s sweet potatoes are grown in the alluvial soil at the banks of the Namhangang River in Daesin-myeon and in the tilled hills of Sejongdaewang-myeon.

Yeoju is the ideal place to grow sweet potatoes as it is located in the inland area of the country’s central region.

The crops grown in Yeoju accumulate a lot of starch due to the huge daily temperature difference during the harvest season. Sweet potatoes grown in Yeoju have high organic matter content. Thanks to Yeoju soil's good drainage, sweet potatoes have appetizing colors, dense pulp, and sweet chestnut-like flavors. Sweet potatoes of Yeoju are loved by consumers as organic and healthy agricultural snack.

They are sold at higher prices than sweet potatoes from other regions due to high demand. To prevent other regions’ products disguising as sweet potatoes from Yeoju, the city government developed a unique packaging design and registered it to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, making efforts to continue the prestige of Yeoju sweet potatoes.

The members of the Yeoju Sweet Potato Research Association are striving to produce the sweet potatoes of the highest quality.

As alkaline food rich in minerals, vitamins, and fiber both high in quality and quantity, sweet potatoes are becoming even more popular as pollution-free healthy food as they can be grown without using any pesticide.
