Yeoju has long been refer to as a blessed land because of wide plains and distant mountains, making it suitable for people to live. It is also a land of culture as it has the great view of the River Yeo (the old name of the Namhan-gang River), attracting many vagabonds and poets. Numerous cultural sites such as Heunam-ri pre-historic site, Silleuk-sa Temple, Godal-sa Temple Site, the Royal Tomb of King Sejong, the Royal Tomb of King Hyojong, and Birth place of Empress Myeongseong show Yeoju's rich historys.
